Business skill taught by a Green Beret stand-up comic

Thanks for joining me this morning, Inbox Hackers. Quick tip - carb load before ill-advised hikes that take 7 hours and 45 mins. Trust me.

Today, I’ve got simple advice that’ll pay off handsomely. This advice comes from strange bedfellows -  a Green Beret and a stand-up comedian. It’ll simplify your marketing job and daily tasks while giving you a level of focus most people can’t achieve.

Since I am feeling it, we better get it on…

Wrong Thinking

The Green Beret was my Jiu Jitsu instructor.

He said a huge mistake most students make is thinking they need to improve their cardio because they get gassed during rolling sessions (Jiu Jitsu sparring on the mat).

“It’s not about cardio. You just need to get better at Jiu Jitsu,” Mr. Randy said.

Huge lightbulb moment for me and the rest of the class at the time.

Cardio training helps with any physical activity. But not if you’re struggling with the Jiu Jitsu techniques. If you’re doing Jitsu right, you shouldn’t be struggling at all!

It’s all about using the least energy to get the maximum outcome. Let your opponent go all out, get tired, and make a mistake while you wait and catch her or him in a submission — or get to a dominant position.

What about the Comic?

Saw this guy in a small mountain town a couple times and watched his YouTube channel (he did interviews) - he said his only goal for the next year was… Get funnier.

That’s as simple as it gets. His plan to level up in comedy was only to do things that made him funnier. He didn’t focus on:

  • Hiring a public speaking coach

  • Networking with people in the comedy industry

  • Writing better titles for his YouTube videos

He kept the main thing the main thing. Just like the Green Beret. Focus is underrated and underused today.

I get scattered myself.

I get paid to write. I’m dang-good at it too, like them Regulators. I’d be even better if I didn’t waste time on learning how to use AI images, Canva charts, or WP Elementor.

I should keep the main thing the main thing — seven days a week. No different than Kobe Bryant shooting thousands of shots in the gym before more NBAers were even out of bed. Kobe’s craft was basketball. He practiced the basics in maniacal fashion.

That’s how you find tiny advantages your competitors never will — because they lack focus.

Bottom Line

If your main thing is writing. Get better at writing. If it’s social media. Get better at social media. If it’s video production. Get better at video production.

Caveat. You may have to become a serial killer of distractions first - here’s help.
