17 Unique Writing Tips Guaranteed to Make You a Stronger Writer

Last Friday morning, I started hunting down writing tips for y’all Inbox Hackers.

I didn’t want some overused or retreaded list of tips.

So, I settled in and watched a pile of videos to find tips I hadn’t seen before. Took three hours and change. I gathered good advice from rappers, producers, best selling authors, etc.

Some are paraphrased. Enjoy. And USE the tips. Else, they’re worthless.

  1. “Don’t judge every sentence as it comes out.” ~Judd Apatow

  1. “Keeping a notebook is the best way to immortalize bad ideas.” ~Stephen King (he prefers to use ideas that stick around in his mind over time, vs. writing down EVERY idea)

  1. “Make it ‘breezy’ for the reader.” ~Spider-Man writer

  1. “Find alone space for writing, even if it’s not ideal (e.g., a laundry room).” ~Dan Brown

  1. “Readers are lazy and selfish (not an insult to readers).” ~This lady

  1. “Writing that involves ‘showing’ presents details that allow readers to draw their own conclusions.” ~Newspaper Research Journal

  1. “Make me care. Emotionally, intellectually, aesthetically.” ~Andrew Stanton

  1. “The cadence becomes easier and easier every time you rewrite something.” ~Phoebe Bridgers

  1. “What makes it great is the personal, with all the imperfections.” ~Rick Rubin

  1. “Picture your story like a moving clock.” ~Plot Devices dude

  1. “Be excited about your work. Enthusiasm is 99% of the process.” ~Unknown

  1. “Your imagination is your ability to put yourself into the souls of other people.” ~Andrew Klavan

  1. “If you describe things in matter-of-fact, non-tactile language, you break the spell over the reader.” ~Nalo Hopkinson

  1. “There’s very little engagement when you give readers an overused comparison. Create an implied comparison that makes readers work their brains to see the image.” ~Nalo Hopkinson

  1. “My process is to find the details in everything.” ~Nas

  1. “Sit and watch your favorite movie with the screenplay in your hands to read along.” ~Aaron Sorkin

  1. “Showing brings the emotion. Telling brings communication." ~Joshua Fields Millburn

Again. Use the tips. Adding just a couple of the actions above will give you an advantage.
