2024’s Top 7 Retail Stats (& Trends)

I’ve got takes on a few of these after I list them for you.

#7 Dining, events, & wellness spaces in shopping venues are popular with 6 outta 10 survey respondents

#6 Shopify powers 18.76% of ecommerce websites. Wix & WooCommerce power around 12% each

#5 About 57% of U.S. shoppers have bought through social media (it’s 90% in China)

#4 Before buying a new item, 64% of Gen Zers look for a secondhand version of the item 

#3 A whoppin’ 93% of U.S. consumers used recommerce to avoid inflation pain

#2 One-third of consumers bought an item in-store right away after discovering it

#1 Dollar General has 20,583 stores vs. Walmart’s 5,321 stores

My Take on Some 2024 Retail Stats & Trends

Starting from the top…

#7 I constantly read about people showing interest in “third spaces.” No idea what guru came up with that terminology. It means people want to get out of the house to be around other humans. 

If not to chat with them, at least to people-watch — the health benefits of just being around other people are similar to being around trees (aka forest bathing - another idiotic term). You don’t have to whisper to an Oak tree or kiss a Maple tree to feel better. Just be next to one.

#5 I hope I never buy anything directly on social media. I’ve got standards, people🥴. Watching a lady… or dude… crafting their “bespoke” jewelry on Facebook, well, it makes me nauseous. Also brings out the worst in me, in case you can’t tell😄.

However, I get why people buy from a real person selling stuff from their bedroom or garage. There’s a good-sized chunk of the U.S. population that doesn’t want to give part of their paycheck to a large corporation (for reasons like climate, political stuff, greedy impressions, etc.).  

And trust in large entities is non-existent today… and should be. Large entities’ own fault if people prefer buying artisan bread via TikTok (or Craigslist - yeah, it lives - 2024 stats).

#1 Does shopping at Dollar General suck? Yeah, a little. However, the messy aisles, broke-down self-checkouts, and space-cadet human cashiers get erased by the quick convenience of Dollar General. 

You’re 4x more likely to drive by a Dollar General than a Walmart (says the stat above). And you don’t have to walk 400 yards to grab a gallon of milk from the back of a warehouse-size superstore. And, somehow, you’re less encumbered by idjits in Dollar General which helps you get in and out faster, too. 

Convenience trumps a lotta retail downsides, folks.
